Back in September, glimpses of the behind the scenes for the making of The Devil Wears Prada 2 could be seen all over social media. We got to see Andrea, Miranda, Nigel and Emily back after twenty years. It all felt surreal, especially for me. I saw the first movie with my parents all the way back in 2006, at the time I was too young to really comprehend much of the story and the movie always felt like a distant memory.
However, I decided to give it another watch shortly before they began to film the sequel, and I simply loved the movie so much! It is such an interesting story, watching it now as an adult, made me understand certain themes of the movie a little better, in my opinion this movie goes beyond just showing high fashion clothes. It’s a movie that shows how, if you want to reach the top and become successful, there will be sacrifices you’ll have to make, and with that, there are consequences that come along.
In November we got our very first teaser, the crumbs we got from it was enough to feed my little fan girl heart. Later, they said we would get a proper trailer and well, that time has finally come! The trailer didn’t reveal much of the plot, many fans were worried that the plot would end up getting spoiled somehow because of the many recordings we got from the behind the scenes-but frankly even after watching the trailer, I have more questions than answers, which is great.
How Much Did Things Change in Twenty Years?

We get to now see a more confident Andy, which shows how much her character evolved over the years. It makes me wonder if she finally became the journalist she always wanted to be. Another interesting detail was how she approached Miranda, and Miranda ever being the cold boss she’s always been, played into the whole ”who is this? Do I know her?”
Which is my next point. I have been seeing all over my X feed people discussing the possibility of Miranda having dementia or even Alzheimer’s, because she claims to not remember Andy nor Emily, when both of them were her assistants during the events of the first movie. But to me, it really didn’t seem that way. Miranda has always thought of herself as above the rest, there’s a scene in the first movie where her, Andrea and Emily attend an event and Miranda has her assistants whisper the names of each guests. She simply never had time to remember names. She called Andy ”Emily” for a while until she finally decided to call her by her real name. Miranda was always distant with those who worked with her, so this to me didn’t seem odd.
She could also be playing the spiteful one. Andrea left her in Paris at the end of the movie. By then, she was growing somewhat sweet on Andrea, she saw how much potential this girl had. But Andrea fearing turning like Miranda, walked away then. Who knows what happened during those twenty years. Perhaps Miranda grew even colder than she already was, maybe she saw that she couldn’t develop another close bond with another silly assistant that would throw everything away. It has me thinking that part of her is simply still holding grudges against Andy for that.

Many have been discussing just how dark the movie seems to be compared to the first one, but I think it might not be unintentional. Yes, a lot of media these days tend to look darker or even overly polished compared to movies that came out in the early 2000s. But in this case, I find it fitting. Fashion has changed a lot from what it was back in 2006, add to that decors and such. Hence why Miranda’s office looks so different compared to how it looked in 2006 at least she kept the same office chair.

Another thing about the darker lighting, in this shot specifically we can see a melancholic Miranda wandering the streets of Milan. The lights behind her appear bright but the expression on her face is one of vulnerability. I think, in this film we will see Miranda’s struggles with the modern fashion industry. Andrea coming back is also a bit symbolic, almost like a ghost from her past.
What are my Expectations?
I am honestly very excited, I absolutely love the main cast, especially Meryl Streep. I am also quite involved within the more fandom side of the movie, the pairing between Andy and Miranda(known as MirAndy) is particularly interesting to me and I consumed quite a few very well written fanfics, I even wrote my own. I also truly enjoy watching all the amazing video edits other fans come up with.
While a lot of movies recently are pretty disappointing these days, I still look forward to this one. The first movie was based on the novel which goes by the same name, it quickly became a series of books, although from what I heard the books are not all that great; and even the first movie took some liberties with the plot and characters. I do have high hopes for it since we have the same director and screenwriter as the first movie.
I just know that when the movie comes out, I will be happily seated in the theater room. I’m all giddy at the thought of it and May can’t come faster!
Let me know if you guys also watched the trailer and if you are also excited about this? Or do you feel the need for a sequel wasn’t needed? I would love to read your thoughts in the comments!
